Meeting with Governor Howard Dean, DNC Chairman!
Washington, DC

Address / Description Democratic National Committee Headquarters 430 South Capitol Street, SE, Washington DC 20003; FIRST FLOOR TRAINING ROOM; 4:30-5:30 pm

Additional Information Governor Howard Dean, the Chair of the DNC, has agreed to meet with RIW! As Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Gov. Howard Dean is making the Democratic Party competitive in every race, in every district, in every state and territory, while integrating national and state party operations and standing up for Democrats' core values. His election to this post on February 12, 2005 is the most recent chapter in a life dedicated to shaping the future of the Democratic Party. Most recently, after achieving national prominence in his bid for the Democratic nomination for president, Governor Dean founded Democracy for America in 2004 to build on the groundswell of support and the wave of new energy sweeping the Party. And since that time, Democracy for America has been working with the grassroots to elect fiscally responsible and socially progressive candidates to all levels of government -- local, state, and federal -- all over the country. The breadth of Governor Dean's political experience has given him a unique perspective. He began his political career in the early 1980's as the Chittenden County (Vermont) Democratic Party chair. In 1983, Dean was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. He was then elected lieutenant governor in 1986 and was re-elected in 1988 and 1990. He became Vermont's governor upon the death of Governor Richard A. Snelling on August 14, 1991. Elected to a full term in November 1992, Governor Dean was re-elected four more times and created a record based on fiscally conservative principles that promoted equality and opportunity for all the citizens of Vermont. Under his leadership, Vermont paid down its debt and by 2001 enjoyed a $100 million surplus. Through his innovative health care plan, 96 percent of Vermont's children now have health care coverage and more than a third of Vermont's Medicare recipients receive state help in paying for their prescription drugs. His 'Success by Six' program ensures that more resources like day-care and home nurses are available to parents if they need them. And with strong support from Governor Dean, Vermont officials instituted an Interactive Learning Network that wired almost all the state's high schools, even in the most rural areas. Governor Dean's successes prompted Governing magazine to proclaim him "Public Official of the Year" in 2002. Dean's leadership roles also include turns as chairman of the National Governors' Association, the Democratic Governors' Association, and the New England Governors' Conference. Before entering politics, Dean received a medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City in 1978. Upon completing his residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, he went on to practice internal medicine in Shelburne, Vermont. Tour of DC's Historic Sites with David Tulloch
Washington, DC

Additional Information Come and join RIW in a tour of DC's most historic and beautiful sites with Cook College's David Tulloch. David is an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture in Rutgers’ new School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. He also serves as Associate Director of the Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis (http://www.crssa.rutgers.edu/) and Curriculum Coordinator for Environmental Planning and Design. As a graduate of the University of Kentucky, Louisiana State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he has a passion for the critical role of state universities as a source for world-class research and education. His research and teaching include an emphasis on bridging the gap between the practice of landscape architecture and the geospatial tools that have become so integral to managing American landscapes. This includes a recent exploration of map-hacks as a tool for sharing landscape architecture with a broad audience. Aside from his primary teaching duties, he also gives guest lectures on "The Top 10 Shapers of the American Landscape" and "A Requiem for Memorial Design" in Environmental Design Analysis (11:550:230). He regularly leads student groups on urban hikes in a variety of settings, but he promises that this tour of DC will be much less grueling than his regular RU Outdoors Club tip-to-tip hike of Manhattan. BUT BE PREPARED TO WALK AND WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES. Participants should expect to see a few new sites that they might have missed and some of the same old sites in a new way. Once you're done with this tour, you will never look at DC the same way again! Meeting with Mike DuHaime, LC '95, Political Director of the Republican National Committee
Washington, DC

Address / Description RNC Headquarters; 310 First Street, SE, Washington, DC; 5-6:30 PM

Additional Information Have you ever wondered about how the Republican party picks their candidates for elections or how a political party comes up with its platform? Mike DuHaime, Political Director for the Republican National Committee, has the answers to these questions, and can help you learn more about the inner workings of a political party. DuHaime graduated from Rutgers University in 1995 with a BA in both journalism and political science. DuHaime was also a four-year skater on the Rutgers Ice Hockey team where he served as a captain for championship teams his junior and senior seasons. In 1997, DuHaime managed the New Jersey State Senate’s most highly targeted race leading Tony Bucco to victory in the primary and then defeating Democrat Senator Gordon MacInnes, despite being severely outspent in both races. Bucco is the only Republican to defeat an incumbent Democrat Senator in New Jersey since 1991. As the Vice-President of Political Communications in 1998 for Campbell & Pusateri, Ltd., a national Republican consulting firm in Alexandria, Virginia, DuHaime designed paid media and mail strategies for races throughout the country, the most noteworthy of which was the open seat victory of Pennsylvania Congressman Don Sherwood in a district where Democrats outnumbered Republicans. Prior to opening his own consulting firm, DuHaime served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for Congressman Bob Franks’ near upset U.S. Senate bid against billionaire Jon Corzine, in which Franks nearly pulled off the upset despite being outspent twelve to one. DuHaime owned his own political consulting firm from 2001 to 2003. DuHaime Communications, Inc. won an impressive 88% of its races for federal, state, county and local office. DuHaime served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Republican State Committee in 2002 helping to rid the Republic of Senator Bob Torricelli. The state party utilized innovative GOTV tactics that resulted in increased turnout in GOP strongholds that, for the first time in years, outpaced the turnout in Democrat areas. Recognized for his ability and success, Campaigns & Elections Magazine named DuHaime a “Rising Star in American Politics” at the age of 24 in 1998, and he has taught seminars on political communication and grassroots campaigning to candidates and operatives in New Jersey and Washington. DuHaime has also spoken on grassroots politics at Harvard and Rutgers. Prior to working on the Bush campaign, DuHaime has already built an impressive resume in state and national politics by helping Republicans win elections on the local, state and federal level. He is known for his ability to coordinate genuine grassroots politics with creative campaign communications, strategies and tactics. As a Regional Political Director for Bush-Cheney ’04, DuHaime helped develop the national GOTV and Election Day efforts and directed the day-to-day campaign operations in 11 northeastern states, which yielded millions more votes for the President in the region and kept Senator Kerry tied up in his Northeastern base. Come out and enjoy an afternoon with RIW at the Republican National Committee office building. Food and beverages will be served at the event. RSVP to Nicole Guanlao at (202) 220-1375 or at ruwash@rci.rutgers.edu. RSVP by 5 PM, Tuesday, June 27th.

Additional Information On November 4, 1979, 66 Americans were taken hostage by militant Iranian students at the American Embassy in Tehran, Iran. 52 of these Americans were held captive for a period of 444 days. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the failed rescue attempt of these prisoners, in which eight Air Force and Marine Corps members died. Ambassador Laingen will share with us his views on current international politics, which is especially timely given the recent allegations that Iran’s newest President-elect was, in fact, one of the Tehran captors.

A bit more about Ambassador Laingen:

Ambassador Laingen is currently President of the American Academy of Diplomacy. A Minnesotan, he served in the US Navy in World War II and in the US Foreign Service from 1949 to 1987. His tours of service included assignments in Germany, Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan. He served as the US Ambassador to Malta from 1977 to 1979. In mid 1979 he returned to Iran for a second tour as chargé d'affaires of the American Embassy before being held hostage in the Iran hostage crisis from November 4,1979 to January 20,1981.

Following his release, Ambassador Laingen served as Vice President of the National Defense University in Washington, DC until his retirement from the Foreign Service in 1987. He was Executive Director of the National Commission on the Public Service (the Volcker Commission) from 1987 until the Commission completed its work in 1990.

Ambassador Laingen holds the Award for Valor from the US Department of State, the Distinguished Public Service medal from the Department of Defense, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Olaf College, the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement, a Presidential Meritorious Award and the Foreign Service Cup.

He is a graduate of St. Olaf College in Minnesota, the National War College and has a Masters degree in International Relations from the University of Minnesota. Ambassador Laingen has honorary degrees from Columbia College in Missouri, Hahneman University in Philadelphia, the Western University of Health Sciences and the University of Dubuque.

He is the author of Yellow Ribbon: The Secret Journal of Bruce Laingen (1992).

His wife Penne is credited with helping popularize the yellow ribbon that symbolized concern for hostages in those days and now is used by many to show concern for any American abroad in danger.

Book Party/Wine and Cheese Tasting, Featuring The Award-Winning Author, S. Mitra Kalita
Washington, DC

Address / Description Hall of States
444 N Capitol Street
Suite 351 (near Union Station).
This event is for prospective young authors and journalists or just interested folks.

Mitra Kalita will dazzle the audience with a talk about the production of her first book, “Suburban Sahibs”, a captivating work of narrative nonfiction. Suburban Sahibs tells us a story that still might ring true. As immigration has continuously redefined America, it also has radically transformed the American suburb. Journalist S. Mitra Kalita traces the evolution of the suburb from a destination for new arrivals to a launching pad for them. She focuses on three waves of immigration in the post Civil Rights era through the stories of three families: the Kotharis, Patels and Sarmas. Their experience offers a window into the America that has become: a nation of suburbs, a nation of immigrants.

Additional Information The event is FREE. RSVP to RuWash@rci.rutgers.edu with subject “Mitra Kalita” and please include list all names, email addresses of people coming with you in excel format if you are bringing more than two. You will receive directions and a confirmation upon RSVP.

S. MITRA KALITA is a general-assignment reporter at The Washington Post and serves as president of the South Asian Journalists Association. She is the author of "Suburban Sahibs: Three immigrant families and their passage from India to America," published by Rutgers University Press (2003) and Penguin-India (2004). She has written extensively about immigration and the South Asian diaspora. She previously worked for Newsday in New York City as a business reporter, carving a beat out of immigration and the economy. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, she did extensive reporting on the backlash faced by Arabs and South Asians in the New York area, and authored a chapter in a book about the experience ("At Ground Zero: The Young Reporters Who Were There Tell Their Stories"). She has reported from Buffalo and Bombay, and many points in between.

Mitra graduated cum laude from Rutgers University, Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor's in history and journalism. She received her master's degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Mitra has received numerous awards for her work, is featured in the "Best Business Stories of 2003" and was most recently named Young Journalist of the Year by the New York State Associated Press Association. She has lived in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., where she lives now with her husband, artist Nitin Mukul.
